Having Fun on a Rainy Summer Day [Family Connections {for summer} 2012]

After being stuck inside most of the winter, we were all looking forward to summer for a chance to be outside. The past few years we seem to have gone straight from winter to summer here in Maryland, but this year we actually had a nice spring. We’ve also had a lot of rain.

What do you do with a home full of restless children when it is raining outside?

[pinit]During most rain showers we just let them play in the rain. All of our children have boots appropriate for mud and puddle jumping, and my laundry load is full whether or not I let them outside to play. Sometimes they’ll even get bathing suits on to head out in the rain.

They love playing in the rain.

The children look at all the worms that come up in the rain. They watch the way the rain finds it’s way down the spouts and streams down the driveway.

This summer we’ve had mostly thunderstorms, not just rain showers. We don’t let the kids play in lightening and thunder!

The days we’ve had bad storms have mostly become movie days. 

We’ll all lounge in the living room. Sometimes the little ones spread blankets or bring pillows in, we’ll pop some corn and just enjoy some down time.

There are also lots of things to do as a family away from home on rainy days.

The rain doesn’t have to get you down, it’s an opportunity to have some creative fun.
