Wow... what a story. I'm so sorry that you had to go through such a loss. I am certified as a women's health nurse practitioner and I've heard some great home-birth stories and trained with some nurse midwives. As you know, "normal" birthing can go south pretty fast. Honestly, all procedures and medical interventions carry risks of things going bad. I agree with your hope that your story will cause people to do the research to make sure their birth is as safe as possible. I always wanted a home birth but knew too many of the risks. People (consumers or legislators) need to know what is the standard of practice. We have National Certification requirements in the nursing profession now for nurses in extended practice. That should be the minimum requirement by the board of nursing for anyone in the advanced role (nurse practitioner or midwife). In most cases, to be certified requires that the nurse have an advanced degree as well (master's degree or higher). Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. Any avoidable loss is so, so sad.

In reply to <a href="http://creativlei.com/mirandas-life-and-loss/homebirth/#comment-1633">Amanda</a>.

Hi Amanda. I appreciate your encouragement and support. I feel that telling Miranda's story is so important for women to see the truth of risks, even in a low-risk setting. Thank you for the work you do helping babies thrive. Were you at JHH in 2011? hope you're enjoying the lettering series. Thanks for commenting.

Hi. I found your site because I am doing the #loveyourlettering challenge. I am so glad you are sharing your story of Miranda's life. I am a NICU respiratory therapist. I currently work in Tampa, Florida, but previously worked at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Having seen how perfectly planned and healthy pregnancies turn into tragic births in the hospital setting, home births and birthing centers scare me. I hope more people hear your story and make appropriate decisions for their selves. Thank you for sharing.
