Can you finish this line? “If you like to talk to tomatoes…”
If you can, you probably have children who have seen a *few* episodes of Veggie Tales. They are fun animated stories that put biblical teaching into a children’s vocabulary and understanding.
But what about when your children are ready to learn more? What about when they are at an age when they really should be seeing these stories in context and understanding why they are even there?
The makers of Veggie Tales have now created a series called “What’s in the Bible?”
We’ve seen DVD 1: In the Beginning and I was impressed at the bridge this forms for the children into more mature Bible study. In the first of two episodes on the DVD they introduce what exactly the Bible is and why we see it as important, why there are different translations and how it is composed of . The second episode starts to explain Genesis and Creation. They heard words like Pentateuch, testament, apocrypha and their meanings.
The website has enrichment materials available for free. I printed off coloring pages for our youngest two and word searches, crossword puzzles, and word scrambles for the older three. Nate, our 3 year old, was not quite as interested as the older ones were at first, but all five children are now quoting much of what they were taught (and quoting them in the hysterical voices they heard).

I have to admit that my kids were a little bummed when I told them I brought them a “new movie” from the conference and it was “another bible story movie.” But then they totally got into it! I think the series does a great job of giving good facts in a fun way.
I did think that it was a little more…chaotic?…busy?…lots of changing scenes, voices, etc…than Veggie Tales and (as with any media!) I would still use it judiciously. But I agree, I think it’s a great resource and we’re looking forward to adding a few more to our collection.

Yes, this certainly doesn’t replace a parent’s responsibility to teach sound doctrine at home. I just like to have the ability to put something on the television that doesn’t attack and destroy what we’ve taught, and this fits that bill. I will admit I giggled at some of the silly too. I think the first episode could have been a little more concise, I’m looking forward to seeing how other episodes are told.

Hi,
I’m Hannah. You see Mom and Zuzu at Fiber Arts, and I’m out here in OK. This is totally unrelated to your nice blog post, but I looked up your blog again because I wanted to remind you that you are in our prayers.
Love,
Hannah (aka Anemone)

Thank you Hannah. It means a lot to know we’re prayed for. I hope you all are doing well out in OK! Hope you’re little guy is doing well and your husband and you too. 🙂

I have wondered about those DVDs. They look good and I like the free downloads that come with it.

Amy, I really like the downloads too. It’s helpful in making it more than “just watching TV”, plus I think the more exposure they get especially to things like new vocabulary helps with retention!
