I know, it has been LOOOONG time since I’ve really blogged. Are you wondering what could possibly be keeping me busy? Oh, I’d have to admit it’s the new addiction of cloth diapering. It all really got started last week. I picked up my first batch of unbleached Indian prefolds. That doesn’t sound too exciting does it? Well, it’s only the beginning… These need covers, that’s why I’ve been knitting. Wool (100%) happens to make excellent diaper covers, breathable and inherently anti-microbial. So far I’ve finished a soaker, a pair of shorties and a pair of longies (this in addition to the two I made last week since I need to unravel and re-knit those as they were waaaay too big). I’ve also ordered a few (Daddy-friendly) all-in-one diapers.
While I am trying to patiently wait for all the cool diapers to arrive I got the prefolds all washed and set to use. No pins here. I am using a Snappi with them. Nice and easy and I don’t have to worry about sticking her. These prefolds are soooo soft! I’m a little jealous. Francesca took to them really well. We started using them last Tuesday. She thinks they’re blankets and wants to lay on them whenever I lay one out to change her. A big plus of using them is that she can feel when she pees! She’s able to tell me (not in words yet) when she needs to be changed. I just may get one trained early after all!
Thursday night I did my first load of dirty diaper laundry. I was pleasantly surprised. It really wasn’t gross or hard at all. All I did during the week was dump the diapers into the lined pail, no soaking no swishing in the toilet (I will NOT be doing that), just into the pail. It didn’t stink up the room at all. I’ve been reading a cloth-diapering message board for all the tips and tricks of avoiding stick and mess. The wash was simple, one cold prewash (with baking soda in the basin and white vinegar in a Downey ball), one hot wash with a squirt of Dawn (yes, Dawn) and then two cold rinses to be sure there was no soap left. After they were don’t I did my inspection. All clean, no stains at all and they smelled great, nice and fresh! If I had known it was this easy we would have switched a looong time ago!
The rest of our new dipes should be here this week and I can’t wait. By next week she should be in cloth exclusively! I’m so glad we decided to try this out. Wait until you see her cute little tushie now!
